Abstract
This article examines the agrarian enlightenment of farmers in Galicia during the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The research is based on a diverse array of sources, including newspapers, journals, brochures, and other publications related to agriculture that were circulated among the rural populace during this period. The analysis draws from Polish-language and RusynUkrainian publications, as well as scholarly works by Polish and Ukrainian historians focusing on agricultural issues. The study investigates the nature and accessibility of agricultural literature for Rusyn-Ukrainian and Polish farmers in the region. It has been established that while Polish-language publications predominated, Rusyn-Ukrainian peasants also engaged with literature in their native languages. The article further explores the acquisition processes of popular science monographs and agricultural journals imported from the Russian Empire. It highlights that these publications covered a broad spectrum of agricultural practices, including aquaculture, beekeeping, fertilization, horse breeding, and the raising of both large and small livestock. The author emphasizes that specialized journals provided valuable information for landowners of all sizes, facilitating the adoption of innovations across various categories of farmers. Additionally, the article notes that low literacy rates among peasants posed significant challenges to the assimilation of new agricultural technologies.
